Along the river IJssel, river floodplains of which the Duursche Waarden is one of them offer protection to humans, a home to plants and animals, and a beautiful natural scenery for nature lovers. When water in the river rises above its banks it overflows onto land (floodplains) which is normally dry. When this has happened don't walk too far as you'll end up with a wet suit. Good sturdy walking shoes or wellies are a must all year round.
You'll find the Duursche Waarden between the villages Olst and Wijhe. Waymarked trails take you over dikes, and through floodplains and swamp forests where Scottish Highlanders and Icelandic horses are grazing. Near the remains of a former brick factory, Fortmond, the watchtower offers a great panoramic view over the river.
Stop by the visitor information centre for hiking maps, cycling routes, and information on the landscape. Moreover, if you're hungry after a long walk grab something to eat at the brasserie Op Duur. The brasserie is run by people with special needs, has a lovely patio and is located in the information centre. The nature reserve is easily accessible by car and public transportation.
