A fairytale looking manor house, unused Cold War bunkers, a French and English inspired landscaped garden, if trees could speak they would have a lot to tell about country estate De Haere. Located near the village Olst, the history of country estate De Haere goes back to the fourteenth century. The manor house and its estate have passed through a variety of owners, but since a couple of years it is owned and managed by Foundation IJssellandschap. After being out and about on the estate’s trails, visitors can enjoy a drink or a bite to eat at the manor house. Throughout the year De Haere manor house organizes art exhibitions, workshops, and concerts.
The estate offers four way marked trails to enjoy. These trails take you through greenlands, a forest, and along the bunkers and waterworks. These bunkers and waterworks were part of the flood defense system called IJssellinie during the Cold War. The purpose of the defense line was to protect the Netherlands against a possible Russian invasion. For a long time nobody knew exactly what the real function of the water works were. However, the bunkers and dam have never been used. Today it is possible to visit the bunkers at some occassions.
